Dry be gone

It's pretty much criminal how much winter takes a toll on your skin. I've wanted to cry, my legs are so itchy and dry. So dry that it stings when I put lotion on them.  Ditto my back, my arms, my feet...you get the picture.  I prepared myself for the snow and the temperatures so cold that you can't take a deep breath, but I somehow blocked out the nasty dryness of winter.

Out of necessity, though, I have developed a combat strategy, mobilizing seven, yes SEVEN moisturizers (actually, make that eight because I'm trying a new one) to keep the hounds at bay. And so far, we seem to have reached detente. Here's what I'm reduced to, simply to survive the winter:

AM:   Shower. Don't dry off, but immediately slather Vaseline Intensive Rescue moisture-locking lotion on skin. Then towel off (This, of course, means washing one's towel every day or two.)  Now coat face with Avon's Anew 10% Vitamin C Serum. Then apply Kiehl's Ultra Facial Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. (My normal mineral foundation brings out the flakiness in my skin in the winter.)

At regular intervals throughout the day, hands must be treated with L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream or Burt's Bees Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Cream, whichever is convenient. (We're talking three or four times a day, or the side of my index fingers will snag my clothing.)

PM: When getting ready for bed, slather Kiss My Face Olive and Aloe lotion on skin before donning pajamas. Now coat face with Exuviance Evening Restorative Complex or Kiehl's Abyssine Cream, and you're ready for bed.  (I never thought I'd be one of those women who needed a different moisturizer in the winter. But now I am. Yikes.)

God help me, I'm missing the dampness of England. My skin was supple, my hair was curly, and though I was occasionally chilled to the bone, at least I looked good.

Hands down the best way to combat dry skin:
If you have a tub, fill it and add one cup of olive oil, a little baking soda and your favorite essential oil (optional). Make sure you have a glass of wine and candles. Soak and sip for a bit. Before getting out, make sure to rub your arms, legs, torso, well just all-over, then when you step out, your skin is glistening with the oil and it keeps it incredibly soft. Very inexpensive all-in-all.
I had a girlfriend once who went to bed completely covered in olive oil and a clean every night without fail, roots to toes. It wasn't the most fetching of looks but she had the nicest skin I've ever seen.

Little Sister - I'll add that hint to my radio show!
We swear by Renew bath oil and lotion from Melaleuca. Actually eased my daughters' eczema.
My secret for my very-few-wrinkles face is to have the oiliest skin known to man.

What, no love for Gold Bond? It's the lotion of choice for people who listen to AM radio.

I swear by this cheap Vitamin E oil I get at trader joe's. I smear it on damp skin after a shower and it really works. If I am not damp, I use Kiehls Creme de Corps. Plus hand lotion about 20 times a day, although I am not super picky as to the brand.

The best thing you can do for yourself, if you have radiators at least, is to use a humidifier in your bedroom. It makes a HUGE difference.

My lotion of choice is C.O. Bigelow Quince Hand Cream. It is the only thing that keeps the front of my calves from getting scratched off. I used to like the Kiehl's Rare Earth Body Cream. However, considering the square footage I have to cover, it got to be a little pricey.
I'm with Lulu on the humidifier idea as well. That helps immensely.

Before leaving the shower, I lather up in oil. Shower oil or bath and body oil, or olive oil. THen towel dry to lift off the excess, then I start slathering on the lotion. I do this in the summer too if you happen to have some sun kissed skin!
