JeeSUS. That must suck. I've also been told to do this same thing on a cold slab like concrete or tile. Luckily, two days later it's only a dull ache.
This has happened to me as long as I can remember. Eventually I figured out that it seemed to happen more often if I'd been very active (working out, etc.). Lack of potassium in your diet can affect it. Try eating more bananas. Works for me and since we're genetically similar (go figure) it might work for you, too.
You're right about the bananas. It is likely exactly that.
