Brits don't get country music

I had a couple of friends over for a beer. Put the iPod on a mix of some of my favourite alt country and rockabilly basics. Here are a few of the artists that grace that mix:

Hem
Gillian Welch
Neko Case
Cigar Store Indians
Caitlin Cary
Kim Lenz and her Jaguars
The Honeybees
The Paladins
Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys
The Bad Livers
The Meat Purveyors
Damnations TX
BR5-49
Hank Williams III

They wanted to know what it was and when it would stop. Sigh. They just don't get it.

But there's an American expat event tomorrow night in London at an alt-country bar, and if I can get out of work on time I'm going.

What's wrong with those people? And that was a rockin sweet playlist!

It's funny, because just across the Irish Sea they seem to love country music. A bunch of us ended up singing one night and I was amazed at how familiar my hosts were with old hillbilly music.

Hey, have you seen the movie "Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus"? It's an alt-country paean to the South, produced by the BBC.

Oh God Dave Navarro is so hot! What does that have to do with Country? Absolutely nothing. I am watching "Rock Star". What a hunky piece of eye candy. Yum.

Indie Country, I will have to investigate this. I like all kinds of music. What I miss sometimes is the old country. The stations do not play enough.

When you say "old country" how old are you talking? Are you talking George Jones/Buck Owens early 1960's old, or Lefty Frizell/Hank Williams old, or Bob Wills 1930's old, or Carter family? WHOOOO BOY. I'm feelin hillbilly tonight! Where's my bourbon?!?

My eldest daughter just showed me how to use Bit Torrent so I'm indulging in an orgy of downloading. I got some Dick Dale and I'm working on a 15 volume obscure rockabilly collection.

And my daughter says, no offense intended, Dave Navarro's not hot. He's just scary. I wouldn't know.

Loved the playlist and I'm all for the country along with any other kind of music. Your friends don't know what they're missing!

I think Dave Navarro is more in love with himself than anyone else will ever be.
